CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Lucy Adams lived in an apartment with a couple of friends, who hovered around so much that Maya thought about asking them to leave the cramped confines of the living room, simply so that it wouldn’t interfere with the interview.

She knew that she couldn’t do that, though, because it would only make getting Lucy to talk to her harder. Currently, the young woman was sitting on a sofa that seemed far too large for just her, wearing workout clothes like she was about to go for a run and huddled up as if to keep Maya and Marco out. She was blonde haired and skinny in a way that looked unhealthy to Maya and made her want to make the girl something to eat.

She was clearly getting old, turning into her mother.

“We just want to ask you a couple of questions about Anne, Lucy,” Maya said. “How well would you say you knew her?”

“Pretty well, I guess,” Lucy said. “I mean, we were both members of the main troupe, back at the dance school, not just walk ins.”

“What do you mean by walk ins?” Maya asked. She kept the questions light for now, wanting to try to get the girl to feel at ease.

“People who just come in for a few classes, but they never really make it to the troupe,” Lucy said. “They aren’t serious.”

“And you were serious,” Maya said. It wasn’t even a question. “Like Anne?”

She saw Lucy nod. “She was going to be a star.”

That seemed to be what everyone around Anne thought. Maya found herself wondering if it would have played out that way for her. For every person who actually found fame, there had to be a hundred more where everyone around them thought they had all the talent in the world. Still, if she was within a shot of winning the nationals, Anne must have been pretty good.

“You sound very certain,” Maya said.

“It wasn’t just that she was pretty, or that she could dance,” Lucy said. “We could all dance. It was more… when she walked into a room, it was like the rest of the room stopped. She was the standard that we all had to try to live up to.”

“It must have been tough, trying to do that,” Maya said. “What was it like, in the dance studio?”

Maya caught the pause before Lucy answered. Her expression became happy and bright, but in a fixed kind of way, like she’d practiced it for exactly this kind of moment.

“Everything was fine.”

“So you didn’t spot any problems there?” Maya asked. “There wasn’t any kind with Lucas McFadden and Anne?”

“No, no, of course not,” Lucy said, with that same too tight expression. There was a finality to her tone that said she wasn’t going to talk any more about that.

“What about the night of the show?” Maya asked. “Did Anne seem different in any way?”

“I don’t know,” Lucy said. “Maybe… like distracted, but she’d been distracted for a few weeks. If it had been anyone else, they’d have been in trouble for slacking so close to a big show.
